It seems there are different kinds of .png files. The best way to address this issue is to add the website to IE's compatibility view list. Simply loading the PNG in GIMP and re-exporting it as PNG solved the issue. I can and probably will convert these to gif files, however I am just irriated by this and it's driving me crazy.
